The Kiwis have eaten it for centuries. But only very recently have researchers discovered the arthritis-fighting power of Green Lipped Mussel
It’s been said that we know less about the depths of the ocean than we do about the surface of the moon.
Nearly 80 per cent of the world’s biological activity takes place in the oceans and recent research is slowly unlocking secrets from the seas, which may have profound benefits for our health.
One man who has worked in this field for several years is marine scientist Gr. John Croft, He f1rmly believes the incredible world beneath the waves holds a medicinal treasure trove. In his new book, Health from the seas, john reveals how a supplement of Green Lipped Mussel (a type of shellfish) can relieve the symptoms of a dreaded disease like arthritis.
“I was born in Lancashire and my original career was at sea with the Merchant Marine,” John says. “In 1947, I moved to New Zealand and took a position with a small firm which was developing ways to farm the New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel (GLM) for food.”
“In 1947, it was discovered that Green Lipped Mussels had the potential natural remedy for arthritis”
“I was engaged to set up the first Green Lipped Mussel farm in New Zealand”, he said. “In the first year we harvested 65 tonnes. Last year, however, we harvested a whopping 85,000 tonnes, which makes it a bigger concern than the New Zealand wine industry.”
It was in 1947 that an American research program studying marine molluscs for anti-cancer properties, found the GLM to be a potential natural remedy for arthritis.
Since then Healtheries-a New Zealand based multinational natural healthcare company has introduced the extract of GLM in the capsule form under the brand name of seatone Today. Seatone is sold in over 30 countries and has benefited million of users worldwide.
Green Lipped Mussel Extract (GLME) has now been subjected to more than 30 years of quality scientific research and proven in laboratory and clinical trial, to be effective in treating both rheumatoid and osteo forms of arthritis.
The benefit comes as relief from pain and improvement in genera mobility. Usually, the improvement in these conditions is gradual and progressive; it is also usually long lasting and not temporary. Normally, the firs thing to be noticed is a reduction in pain. Which is then followed by gradual improvement in grip strength, freedom of movement or other mobility. Besides it does not have the classical adverse side effects generally associated with any drug therapy.
“I was to set up the firs Green Lipped Mussel farm in New Zealand. In the firs year we harvested 65 tonnes. Last year, however, we harvested 85,000 tonnes, which makes it a bigger concern than the New Zealand wine industry.” (Dr. John Croft)
The reason behind this benefit is that GLME contains anti-inflammatory agent’s immune modulators and many essential building blocks-proteins. Minerals, glycosaminoglycans and marine long chain fatty acids-all naturally occurring substances known to maintain joint mobility and well being and needed to rebuild collagen, proteoglycans and synovial fluid found in the joints, ligaments and tendons.
The normal and recommended dosage level is about 1gram of GLME powder each day for the average adult. This equates to two Seatone 500mg capsules each day but, if desired, there is no danger in doubling this level.
GLME manufactured by Healtheries of New Zealand is now available in India through their authorised representatives-Perma Healthcare. The cost for this therapy of 1000mg/day comes to Rs 50 per day for first three months, which can be later reduced to 500mg/day, that is, Rs 25 per day
